What is a crypto savings vault?

4 min readUpdated

Most people keep all their crypto in the same wallet they use to trade, mint and connect to apps. That wallet is also the most exposed thing they own: one leaked key, one malicious approval or one rushed signature can move everything in seconds. A crypto savings vault is a simple answer. Spend from your everyday wallet, and keep your long-term holdings somewhere that is much harder to empty.

A savings account for your crypto

Think of the checking and savings accounts at a bank. You pay for things from checking, so it is convenient and a little risky. Savings sits apart, moves more slowly and has more checks around it, because that money is meant to last. A crypto savings vault applies the same idea on-chain: a separate address with stricter rules about how money leaves.

Unlike a bank, a non-custodial vault is not run by a company that holds your funds. The rules are enforced by smart contracts, and the keys stay with you.

What makes a vault different from a regular wallet

  • A separate address. Your savings are not sitting in the wallet you connect to websites and apps every day.
  • More than one key. Sensitive actions need the approval of several keys instead of one.
  • A withdrawal delay. A withdrawal started with one key waits before it can complete, which gives you time to notice and react.
  • Alerts. You are told when a withdrawal is requested or the vault's settings change.
  • A way out that doesn't depend on a company. You can always operate your vault with standard, public tools.

How a FORTCORE vault works

A FORTCORE vault is a Safe smart account owned by three keys that you choose: your everyday wallet, a backup device and a recovery key. Any two of them together can approve anything. Your everyday wallet can also act alone, but only in one way: it can ask to withdraw, and that request waits 48 hours by default (you can choose anywhere from 24 to 72).

During the wait, FORTCORE alerts you by email, Telegram or webhook. If the request is not yours, any two of your keys cancel it. If it is yours, it completes on its own when the clock runs out, or straight away if you approve with a second key.

FORTCORE never holds your keys or funds, and it cannot move, freeze or spend anything. It deploys no custom smart contracts: the vault is built from established open-source components. Read the full security model.

What a vault protects against

  • A stolen or compromised everyday wallet key: a thief can only queue a withdrawal, and you can cancel it.
  • A phishing signature or approval from your everyday wallet: it can't touch the savings in your vault, and anything it queues has to wait.
  • A lost or broken device: your two remaining keys replace it without moving funds out of the vault.

What it does not protect against

A vault reduces risk; it does not remove it. It helps to know the limits.

  • Two compromised keys. Two keys together have full control, so keep them on different devices in different places.
  • Funds outside the vault. Only what you move into the vault is protected. Whatever stays in your everyday wallet is as exposed as ever.
  • Your own two-key approvals. A withdrawal approved with two keys goes through immediately, so check the destination address carefully.
  • Losing two keys. Depending on which two, you could be locked out. Keep your backup and recovery keys somewhere safe.

Who should use a savings vault

  • Long-term holders with an amount they can't afford to lose.
  • Active on-chain users who sign transactions often and face phishing and fake sites.
  • Anyone who already uses a hardware wallet and wants a safety net on top of it.
  • People who have been scammed before and don't want to go through it twice.

How to set one up

  1. 1Create a free FORTCORE account with your email.
  2. 2Link the wallet you use every day.
  3. 3Choose your three keys and create the vault. Your wallet pays the network fee.
  4. 4Switch on protection: approve with two keys, add two alert channels and practice a withdrawal and a cancel.
  5. 5Move your long-term savings into the vault.

The whole setup takes a few minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is a crypto savings vault the same as a hardware wallet?

No. A hardware wallet protects a key. A vault is a separate account with rules around it: several keys, a withdrawal delay and alerts. You can use hardware wallets as the keys of a vault.

Does a crypto savings vault earn interest?

No. A FORTCORE vault is about protecting what you hold, not earning a return. It doesn't lend, stake or invest your crypto.

Can I withdraw from the vault whenever I want?

Yes. A withdrawal started with one key waits 48 hours by default, and a withdrawal approved with any two of your keys goes through immediately.

Who controls a FORTCORE vault?

You do. Only your keys can move the funds. FORTCORE watches the vault and sends alerts, but it can't move, freeze or spend anything.
